Old World Granite adds Park Industries CNC Stone Machinery | Review + Case Study

Old World Granite & Stone

|

Yancy and Tamie Devine, owners of Old World Granite & Stone (TX), were ready to take their stone fabrication business to the next level. But to do so, they needed a way to make production faster, leaner, and far more reliable…so they gave Park Industries® a call.

The results? The ability to produce nearly 1000 sq. ft. / day with only 4 employees in the shop.

YUKON Only Do So Much

After acquiring the business in 2012, the Devine’s spent the better part of the next decade cutting with their YUKON® Bridge Saw. They dropped sinks and polished by hand. Yancy described their experience with manual fabrication:

“We were stuck in a rut. You can’t grow and had to rely solely on labor. One day we came in and no one in the shop showed up for work. We were tired of the stress and the fight to get jobs done.”

New Shop, New Machines, New Life

The Devine’s decided they couldn’t wait any longer to make a change. In 2018, Yancy quit his day job as a builder and joined the company full time. His first order of business? Building a new 20,000 sq ft shop. Yancy did all of the construction and layout himself, starting “from dirt”. They also began researching machines to automate their processes when it was ready.

In November of 2020, the building was completed and looking pristine with a gorgeous new showroom. It even included blue epoxied floors in the shop to help keep it tidy. Now it was time to fill it with new equipment…And fill it they did.

Not even a month later, trucks rolled up to Old World Granite & Stone via I-35 south from St. Cloud, Minnesota. They installed a two table SABERjet™ XP CNC Sawjet, TITAN® 3700 CNC Router, FASTBACK® II Edge Polisher, HydroClear™ Pro 95 Water System, and Pathfinder Digital Photo Station…all at the same time! A second TITAN® 3700 would be added soon after.

With a new machine for every aspect of fabrication, their production and efficiency was totally revamped in one game-changing leap. Old World was now a 100% digital and 100% Park Industries® shop.

Machine Review

SABERjet XP

Yancy explains why they chose the SABERjet™ XP CNC Sawjet to lead the charge for their sawing production.

“The SABERjet™ XP is a beast for high speed production…I can cut 20-25 slabs a day on it. Yesterday I cut 12 slabs before lunch!”

Yancy continues that it’s not just the high speed processing they like, “Mitering is extremely important to us and so is the ability to cut fragile materials. We looked at a robot, but it didn’t do either of those well, if at all. On the SABERjet™ XP the other day, we mitered 3 slabs in under 3 hours. On a bridge saw, that same job would’ve taken 6 slabs and a full week. And on a robot, you can’t even do it. The processing speed and material yield you can achieve with this machine is huge.”

TITAN®

Yancy could run a class on his TITAN® 3700 CNC Routers. The ability to keep it simple or get as dialed into the machine as you want, is what he loves about it. He is very dialed into his.

“The TITAN® is my favorite machine. You can get so much out of it and the machine can do so much for you. The tool life I am achieving with it is insane. I am getting 4,500+ feet on my finger bit and am still on my first set of flat polish tools at 26,000 feet on the metals…even though we primarily do flat edges.”

Sink polishing has been transformed for them. It used to take them all day to fabricate and polish 6 sinks. Now with the TITAN® they can do that in a little over an hour.

Old World Granite & Tile utilizes two TITAN® 3700 CNC Routers & a FASTBACK® II Edge Polisher for their stone polishing production.

FASTBACK® II

Yancy shares he is happy to join FASTBACK® II Edge polisher fan club.

“I know everyone calls it a money printer….and it really is. Before that machine our splash was dull, and no one wanted to do it. Now we have the best finish there is. It only runs a few hours per day and knocks out anything you throw at it.”

HydroClear™ Pro

Yancy explains how their HydroClear™ Pro Water System has rounded out their fabrication process.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the HydroClear™ PRO system – water is extremely important for any shop. There is no maintenance on it besides changing the bag out once every 3 weeks and adding some chemicals once a month. It’s been a set it and forget it. The recycled water quality is great and it keeps up with all of our machines without any problems.”

Big Time Results

Yancy runs their shop like a “ballet” and has been able to accomplish quite a bit with their new machines. Their growth based solely on the numbers is astonishing: nearly 400% more production with 75% less labor utilized!

Production before going digital:

  • 200 sq. ft. / day or less
  • 10 employees in the shop
  • Like “pulling-teeth” to get jobs done

Daily production now:

  • 800-1000 sq. ft. / day
  • 4 employees in the shop
  • Like “clockwork” to get jobs done

Yancy reflects on life now that he has dependable production to count on, “It’s even harder to find people these days so it feels freeing that, if needed, one person can run the entire shop. The efficiency we’ve gained is insane. I couldn’t imagine being where we were 4 years ago.”

He continues, “We can confidently commit to any job now and our lead times are down to one week. We are a preferred vendor because of our reliability – couldn’t have accomplished that without our machines.”

A Recommendation of Reliability

Old World Granite’s growth story is one of drive, trust, and perseverance. Yancy shares why he trusted Park Industries® to get them where they needed to go, and why he’d recommend others to trust them too.

“Park’s customer service is second to none. With next day parts and great phone support, I’m never going to lose sleep if something goes wrong because I know they have my back. Plus, I think these machines are the most reliable way to fabricate stone. They don’t break down or call in sick…they just keep running.”

He concludes, “Everything Park offers proves reliability to me and that is the biggest reason why I choose them. If it wasn’t for Park and their machines, we couldn’t have grown to where we are today. We’d still be stuck in a rut. Now we have freedom…to grow, to control our schedule, and to increase our profitability.”
