Imperial Marble of Texas | Park Industries Customers + Fabricator Spotlight

Imperial Marble of Texas, a father and son company, tripled their production after getting the complete digital package of equipment from Park Industries, delivered all on the same day. They currently produce about 2,000 sq. ft/week with three shop employees.

Imperial Marble of Texas

Founded in 1989 by Rocky Almaya Sr., Imperial Marble of Texas (IMOT) started as a cultured marble and molded countertop business. After a few years, they opened up a small granite shop consisting of a bridge saw and two fabricators, doing everything by hand. Just a few days into their new enterprise, they decided to get out of the cultured marble business to focus primarily on the granite business.

They grew into two small fabrication shops in different locations until early 2018 when they built a brand new facility. In 2016, Rocky Almaya Jr. joined his father to help run IMOT. Specializing in new residential homes, their goal is to deliver quality products and achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction. They currently have three shop employees (1 programmer and 2 fabricators) and produce about 2,000 sq. ft. per week.

A Father & Son Operation

Junior Joins Senior

Rocky Sr. was doing it all before his son joined IMOT. He was templating, ordering materials, managing the shop, helping customers, and more. When Rocky Jr. joined his father, he started by getting familiar with materials, learning how the fabrication process worked, and working as a hand polisher. He describes this process, “It was tough to learn how to fabricate, it’s hard work. I could have easily just started working in the office and avoided it, but it was important to me to learn it. My goal is to know every aspect of this industry.”

Their Current Roles

Rocky Jr. has taken over many responsibilities from his father including ordering materials, helping customers, scheduling, managing the shop’s production and running their SABERjet™. Rocky Sr. now focuses on top-level business management and quality control, checking every job personally before it goes off for installation.

On working with his father Rocky Jr. comments, “There’s been plenty of times where it is super challenging. My dad and I have knocked heads together on more than one occasion and it could get ugly [laughs], but we always work together and get through it with our goal of success being at the top of our list.”

Going Digital, All at Once

New Building, New Philosophy

As they planned the move to the new facility, they wanted to fill it with all new equipment. Jumping from a manual operation into the digital CNC world was a big part of the plan. They were first intrigued by automation from an uncle who was also in the industry. This curiosity resulted in a trip to a Park Industries® Digital Stoneworking Expo™, the perfect place to learn everything you’d need to know about making the transition to digital fabrication.

At a summer DSE event at Park Industries® in Minnesota, they viewed demos of the machines and immediately recognized the production potential of Park’s CNC machinery. Rocky Jr. advocated for this change and after discussing it with his father, they agreed, “We need Park CNC Machines.”

Investing in the Entire Digital Package

Not even a month after attending the DSE, IMOT had the FUSION® CNC Sawjet and two TITAN® CNC Routers on order, ready to be delivered when the new shop was ready. Later that fall, the SABERjet™ CNC Sawjet was launched and after discussing tihs with their sales consultant, they swapped the FUSION® out for the SABERjet™ finding that its compact design was a better fit for their new shop.

While Park’s CNC technology really stood out to IMOT, it was the information and training Park Industries® provided after the sale that really stood out. Rocky Jr. attended training personally, “I had a blast. The trainers were great and I found the software really easy to pick up. It was an extremely worthwhile experience, and I say that even though it was -20 degrees the whole time I was there!”

The very same day that building’s structure was complete, two trucks arrived inbound from MN. Between the two of them, they carried 5 new machines from Park Industries®. An entire production line for every aspect of fabrication was installed within a week and consisted of the SABERjet, two TITAN’s, a HydroClear Water Clarification System, and Pathfinder Digital Imaging System.

The Results of New Equipment

Tripling Production With Less Labor

Looking back on the decision to build a new facility filled with new machines, Rocky Jr. comments, “It definitely was a challenge, but it was so worth it. In the end, it all worked out great. Seeing it all come together felt amazing.”

Since going digital, their production capabilities have increased dramatically and allowed them to pick up much more business. They currently sit comfortably at about 2,000 sq. ft/week when they previously were at 700 sq. ft./week.

They know their machines can handle more and plan on ramping up their production further. “It’s going to be a really busy summer,” states Rocky Jr. (at the time of this spring interview). They are ramping up in a controlled state because they only have 3 shop employees and will not sacrifice the quality of their work for quantity. They prefer to rely on their CNC machines rather than excessive labor.

Machine Review

SABERjet™ CNC Sawjet: “We chose the SABERjet for its compact design and how tight it can nest. The waterjet capabilities are amazing, its miterjet is spot on. The blade to transition jet is damn good. The arc jet mitering worked out extremely well for a shower job we did with curved miters. The SABERjet rips through production and feeds our two TITAN’s.”

TITAN® CNC Router (x2): “The TITAN has a great quality of polish, it’s always precise, and extremely reliable. They can run nonstop, it’s very satisfying to push the button and walk away to do something else. When you come back to it, the job is done and the pieces always turn out great.”

HydroClear™ Water Clarification System: “The HydroClear has cut our water bill in half while keeping everything clean. It filters the water really well. During tours, customers love hearing about the HydroClear and the positive environmental impact of it.”

Park Partnership

Production & Service Reign Supreme

When asked what has been the greatest benefits of choosing Park Industries® as IMOT’s equipment provider, Rocky Jr. responds enthusiastically, “The increase to both our production numbers and the quality of our product. We tripled our production and just being able to show off the machines when customers visit nearly always wins them over.”

He continues, “Their service has been incredible. Parts are always next day. Their support team has fixed any issue we’ve had within minutes over the phone or by hopping onto our machine remotely if needed. With this type of investment, especially getting it all at once, customer service was vital to our decision of going with Park.” Rocky recalls his experience after buying previous equipment through other manufacturers who touted their great customer service, “They never called us back, they’d just leave us hanging. One machine for example, is still sitting outside, never used it once. No Bueno.”

Rocky Jr. concludes, “To recap, Park Industries® is the way to go.”
